Regarding the Rittenhouse Verdict (A Facebook Dialogue)

Evergreen Baptist Association colleague from Seattle, The Reverend Ken Curl, posted : Here is the blatant unfairness of the criminal justice system. Kyle Rittenhouse a 17 year old white boy kills two people and blows the arm and off another man and walks free. Julius Jones gets his death sentence commuted by the Governor of the state of Oklahoma but his sentence is change to life without the possibility of parole. In other words the Governor has just delayed his death rather than Mr. Jones dying right now he will still die in prison. That is nothing but a different kind of death sentence. Do these people think that this injustice just goes right over our heads. As Richard Pryor said Justice is Just Us.

My response: You are correct Ken. To begin with, carrying a gun/using a gun is far too permissible under the law of many states. All one has to do is say “I was afraid” and mayhem and murder is forgiven. Further, in terms of the application of the law, whites are treated far more differentially than blacks and other dark-skinned people. To your point, Rittenhouse is declared not guilty while Jones is given a “reduced” sentence of life in prison. This kind of disparity renders justice an almost unintelligible term.

Prayers for Darlene Scott and family as we gather at 1:00 today to honor Dayle. His colleague of 67 years, Dale Edmondson, will be the eulogist.

We worship tomorrow at 10:00. There will be a congregational meeting (In-person and Zoom) immediately following. Bible Study will follow the meeting and Lakeshore Connect, an opportunity for new friends to learn about our congregation, will be on Zoom at 1:30.

Today on LABC Zoom – Together in Prayer at 10:00.
