A Letter from the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists
Dear AWAB Members,
These are challenging days in which to be the faith communities we are. In light of the heinous events that took place on Wednesday, January 6, there have been warnings issued and concerns expressed for many of us that may be known as the welcoming and affirming, progressive, liberal, justice-seeking congregations we are.
This heightened sense of alarm seems to be focused on this weekend through Wednesday, January 20, when the United States will witness once more the transition from one political administration to another.
As we walk through these days together, know that you are not alone. Your AWAB family stands with you no matter what may come. As you may have need, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly.
May we hold each other in prayer and thought. May the light of love shine upon us showing us always the way. Please receive this blessing as it was shared with me.

Congratulations times-two to Dr. Snow Flesher, Dean of BST and Professor of Biblical Interpretation, whose national scholarly reputation and expertise in Hebrew Bible has once again been recognized, this time by the National Council of Churches’ appointment of her to serve as section leader for the group of scholars updating the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Her appointment to this significant work underscores one of the many reasons the Appointments and Review Committee of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), “unanimously and enthusiastically” recently reappointed Dean Flesher to the GTU Core Doctoral Faculty for another six years because of her tireless teaching and leadership at BST, her service to the American Baptist denomination and to the academic guild of biblical scholars. BST is a founding seminary of the GTU, a consortium of eight seminaries, six centers of inter-religious studies, five affiliate institutions, making it the largest Ph.D. program in religious studies the country.
