A thought and a prayer as we prepare to celebrate the 4th:
A thought – We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths –- that all of us are created equal –- is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth. Barack Obama, 2nd Inaugural Address
A prayer for the 4th -“Loving God, we confess that we, in many hurtful ways, have paid lip service to liberty. We have been hearers of your word but not doers of it. May this annual celebration of freedom be for us an occasion of honest reflection. May it be a moment of repentance, a time of grace and a season of commitment to your vision for your the well being for every last one of us, even those of us who sometimes lose our way. In the merciful name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
An invitation from Ryan Parker:
A SPECIAL FREE ADVANCE FILM SCREENING FOR LAKESHORE AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH
Sunday, July 9th, 7:00 p.m.
Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife, only to find that in his spectral state, he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence.
A Ghost Story is a beautiful meditation on life, loss, time, and the enduring nature of the human spirit. Because there aren’t any specific references to faith or religion, it has a universal and ecumenical appeal, which will open up opportunities for dialogue around these themes. Writer/director David Lowery will join us for a post-screening conversation.
This screening is free to the Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church community. To RSVP for theater information (East Bay location) and passes, please email Ryan Parker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
