Dear Lakeshore,

This coming Sunday, November 1, is All Saints Sunday.  As October ends and November begins we pause to remember those members of our families, our church and our faith tradition that have preceded us in death. Remember will be the central verb of the day. We remember those who have loved us. We remember those who taught us. We remember those who shaped us. We remember those who formed us. We remember those who invested in us. At the table of Communion we will remember the meaning of the bread and the cup.

Central to our worship will be the proclamation of Isaiah 25:7 “And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all the peoples, the sheet that is spread over all the nation; he will swallow up death forever.”

This Queio Apache Prayer will be offered. “Looking behind I am filled with gratitude. Looking forward, I am filled with vision. Looking upwards, I am filled with strength. Looking within I discover peace.”

In my sermon I will note this quote which author Christina Baker Kline uses as an opening to her novel The Orphan Train. “I’ve come to think that’s what heaven is – a place in the memory of others where our best selves live on.”
